Good Reading = Good Writing.
One thing great writers generally have in common is they are great readers. It makes sense. Reading is the process of viewing what someone else has written.
When we read well-written material, we start to notice certain things. We see how good writers use descriptive words, active verbs, creative and catchy dialog and varied sentence structure. Over time, these writing styles stick in our brains and when we write, we start using these same techniques. Basically, we mimic what others have done. As U2's Bono said, "Every poet is a thief."
This is similar to any career field. If you want to be a great musician, you need to listen to great musicians. The more music you listen to, and in different genres, the better musician you will gradually become.
